Corporate History

Gulf Mobile & Ohio - GM&O acquires the Alton and merges the company into the GM&O.

Alton Railroad - Baltimore & Ohio buys the Chicago & Alton in December 1930, and reorganizes it as the Alton Railroad on January 8, 1931. On January 24, 1931, the B&O filed papers with the Interstate Commerce Commission for control. 

Bankruptcy - Alton enters bankruptcy on November 25, 1942 and the Baltimore & Ohio surrenders the company to the courts.

Chicago & Alton Railroad - successor to the St Louis, Alton & Chicago Railroad, on October 10, 1862.

Bankruptcy - Chicago & Alton enters bankruptcy on August 1, 1922.

Harriman control - E.H. Harriman led a syndicate of over one hundred investors, including George Gould, Jacob Schiff, and James Stillman, to acquire the Chicago & Alton, which Harriman was convinced was mismanaged and undervalued. This syndicate acquired 97 percent of the capital stock of the company in January, 1899. 

Alton & St. Louis Railroad - organized by the Chicago & Alton to extend 26.9 miles south from Alton to East St. Louis, completed in 1864. 

Chicago & Illinois River Railroad - 26.1 miles, leased to the Chicago & Alton in 1875 and acquired in 1879. In 1874, this company built 21.3 miles from Joliet to Coal City and another 4.8 miles from Coal City to Mazonia to connect with the Chicago & Alton.

St. Louis, Alton & Chicago Railroad - successor to the Chicago Alton & St Louis Railroad, February 21, 1857. This company opened an additional 4.3 miles to Lockport in November, 1957, and completed 32.9 miles to Chicago in March, 1858.

Chicago Alton & St Louis Railroad - successor to the Chicago & Mississippi, in February, 1855.

Chicago & Mississippi Railroad - successor to the Alton & Sangamon, this company built 88.8 miles from Springfield to Joliet. Trackage rights over the Rock Island to Chicago, but only for passenger trains. Freight was transferred to canal boats on the Illinois & Michigan Canal for shipment to Chicago.

Alton & Sangamon Railroad- chartered in Illinois on February 27, 1847, to build 72.1 miles from Alton, on the Mississippi River, to the state capitol at Springfield, completed in 1852.
